Rich tributes paid to Begum Sufia Kamal

To mark the 92nd birth anniversary of Begum Sufia Kamal, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad organised a programme titled 'The role of civil society and good governance in resisting violence against women' at the Jatya Press Club recently.

Sufia Kamal dedicated her life to women's liberation movement. She remained at the forefront of all political, social and cultural activities.

The keynote paper titled 'Women repression, democracy and civil society' was presented by Ali Anwar. In his speech he described the role of women in the world history and the rights of women. He said, 'In the movement of democracy and independence the ladies like Pritilata, Jahanara Imam had leading roles. The role of women is also remarkable in the social movements against slave system, child rights, minority rights and off course women's rights.'

Giving different statistics about women repression he also said, 'Today we see women in every single profession but still the overall situation of women has not developed at all. Violence and injustice against women are still rampant.'

National Council member singer Mita Haque presented two Tagore songs in memory of Sufia Kamal--Majhe Majhe taba dekha pai and Ami marerr sagar pari debo.

The Secretary of Mahila Parishad, Aysha Khanom remebered Sufia Kamal and said, ' She was soft-spoken but very bold. She fought against all type of backwardness. We will rise against violence on women in her memory.'

Prominent actress Lucky Inam recited a poem by Sufia Kamal titled Tumi mago shei alor duhita, which was dedicated to Begum Rokeya.

Dr. Shahin Ara Hossain proffessor Rajshahi University and veteran leftwing activist Hena Das also spoke at the occasion. Iffat Ara Dewan, Aditi Mohsin and Khairul Anam Shakil performed songs and paid rich tributes to the poet.
