Rizia Rahman gets Sadat Ali Akhand Literature Award 2003

This year's Sadat Ali Akhand Literature Award went to author Rizia Rahman for her contribution to Bangla literature. She was handed over the award in an simple programme at the Bangla Academy seminar room recently. She is the fourteenth person to get this award. Born in the British period in Kolkata, Rizia Rahman studied economics at the Dhaka University. Principal of an educational institution for quite some time, she started to write stories at the age of nine and many of her stories were published in the newspapers likeShatyajugof Kolkata andShangbadof Dhaka of that period. She has written about thirty books includingGhar Bhanga Ghar, Uttarpurush, Alikhito Upakhyan, Ekti Phuler Janya, Harun Ghorey Phereyni, Durey Kothao.

In his speech the Director General of Bangla Academy, Mansur Musa said, 'All prizes can be categorised into two types; inspiration prize for young generation and recognition prize for the people who have already contributed a lot. Certainly this prize is in recognition of the person who can be considered as the future Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.'

Expressing her feelings Rizia Rahman said, 'I am very proud that I got such an honourable award. Sadat Ali Akhand was a great person who played an important role in the advancement of the society and today my name has been associated with his. It is a great honour for me.'

Among others, ASM Shahjahan, former advisor to the caretaker government, Toyab Hossain, Wakil Ahmed, Tahmina Hossain and Prof. Sirajul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
