A roundtable on the film society movement in Bangladesh will be held today at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka. The roundtable has been organised by 20 film societies who comprise the mainstream of the film society movement in the country.

The topic of the roundtable is "Forty Years of the Film Society Movement in Bangladesh: Objectives and Achievement". The roundtable will be presided over by journalist Shafique Rehman while film activists Mahbub Jamil, Masihuddin Shaker, Mahbub Alam and Tanvir Mokammel will speak on the subject as discussants. The theme paper will be presented by film activists Sabbir Chowdhury and Zahirul Islam.

The film society movement in the country has a glorious past. The film societies or cine clubs are run by film enthusiasts and activists without any patronage from the government. A few film societies are very actively working in the country, which has been possible because of the passionate involvement of the film activists for good cinema. The organisers face contless problems regarding filmshows, seminars, and workshops. Yet, the movement has, on the whole, been satisfactory so far.

The film societies that are involved with the programme are Zahir Raihan Film Society, Dhaka University Film Society, Sergei Bondarchuk Film Club, Chalachitram Film Society, Rainbow Film Society, Bangladesh Film Society, Jahangirnagar Students Film Society, Dhaka Film Club, Dhaka Film Society, Dhaka Cine Club, Chittagong University Film Society, Ritwik Film Society, Academy Film Society, Bagerhat Film Society, Islamic University Film Society, Tangail Film Society, Arkko Film Zeal, Chipachas, Contact Film Society, and Mymensingh Film Society.
