Where have I come from? Where am I going? What is my purpose? These questions have chased human beings at some point of their lives. Searching for appropriate solutions to these mysterious questions, a group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) students made sculptures and masks to present the inner and outer reaction of people. With a total of 75 sculptures and about 100 masks, the group titled ETAMUS recently held a four-day Sculpture and Mask exhibition at central corridor of the proposed Zahir Raihan auditorium on the campus.

Inaugurated by Professor Selim Al Deen, the exhibition drew a huge crowd of university teachers and students.

Tofazzal Hossain Emon, Tareq Mohon and Mehedi Hasan Shajib, three students of Drama and Dramatics Department, worked on sculptures, while Murad Ahmad Rad Nabik, a student of Drama and Dramatics, played with human emotions and shaped them on masks.

"The diversity of human behaviour in different situations has influenced and encouraged me to delve into the mindset of human beings," said Emon. Prejudiced, a sculpture by Emon, is a work that focuses on the class of people who can't live a normal life. Theory of Creation is a work which searches for the identity of power behind all creation. Shonyatai Bodh, Jukti Birol, Nogno Bastob, Nishshobdo Upolobdhi, MonBish, Abhab, and Lolupota were other notable works.

Shajib has a different style and feels more comfortable dealing with the mindset of a woman. The other important works done by him include Shimabadhata, Rup, Shrinkholito and Trishna.

Tareq prefers to work on human nature and the inner reaction to different situations. Dissecting human nature layer by layer, Tareq has sought to shape the real picture of man living beneath the surface of outer behavior. Antormukh, Merudandohin, Bisleshok and Shwapodsonkul were his important works on display.

"Every artiste wants to frame or give shape to human emotion reflected on the face, caused by harsh reality. I always strive to do so," said Murad. Each mask represents a single moment of human emotion in different situations.
