Spirit of Liberation War in theatre

Drama and Theatre Forum of Brac University staged the excerpts from the plays at the National Museum Auditorium on December 9.

Although Liberation War does not appear directly, the spirit of our struggle for freedom is the key factor presented through the social turmoil in the plays.

The students first staged excerpts from Momotaz Uddin Ahmed's Shojoler Maa. Through the story of a war child and the sufferings of the family, Momotaz Uddin Ahmed's play depicts the faulty social milieu in the post Independence War Bangladesh.

Abdullah Al Mamun's drama Shenapoti satirises those who have become a part of the elite class by manipulating the post war scenario.

Syed Shamsul Haq's masterpiece, Payer Awaj Pawa Jay unveils some dark sides of the Liberation War through narratives. Haq's poetic dialogue diction wonderfully presents the brutality carried out by the Pakistani collaborators during the War.

Young artistes of the theatre forum were impressive. However, the excerpts directed by Obayedullah Al Zakir need further improvement. S Awwal's set and light designs should be honed.

Earlier Professor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, vice chancellor of Brac University, Abdullah Al Mamun and Syed Shamsul Haq delivered speeches.
