Stairway to rock heaven
The rambling epic from 1971 obliterated the opposition--all songs from the 1970s--in the survey by British specialist radio station Planet Rock, gaining more than 70 percent of the vote. 'The number one may be seen as a rock cliche but the truth is that it's probably the only rock song ever written that most fans can agree is a classic,' said Planet Rock presenter Mark Jeeves.
Other songs also not noted for their brevity, Free Bird by 1970s US outfit Lynyrd Skynyrd and Queen's six-minute rock-opera hybrid Bohemian Rhapsody from 1975, came in second and third respectively.
