Tabu as Meenaxi: Husain's muse always makes news

After directing the flopGaj Gamini, M F Husain swore never to make another film. However, inMeenaxi: Tale of Three Cities, he has been assisted by his youngest son Owais and his wife and producer Reima (granddaughter of famous filmmaker Akhtar Mirza). "In 1990, painting charcoal drawings at New York, I absorbed America's cinema. I roamed around for 10 years with a TV camera, but the idea of a film took shape during the Berlin Film Festival in 2001," says Owais.

Releasing in the first week of April, Meenaxi… was shot in Hyderabad, Jaisalmer and Prague. The film is about a Hyderabadi perfume seller who helps an author suffering from writer's block. "I wrote the first draft on the flight from Berlin to Mumbai," recalls Owais. The movie also features Delhi boy Kunal Kapoor, last seen in a popular cigarette commercial.

Tabu, his leading lady, is a lot like Meryl Streep, says Owais. "I'd read that Meryl is a mom who transforms herself into an amazing performer and then switches off once the shot is over. Tabu is like that too: A regular woman beneath the greasepaint."
