Tagore songs resonate in the city

Tagore singers perform at the daylong programme

On the occasion, the organisation Rabindrasangeet Shilpi Sangstha (RSS) resounded with festivity through the participation of enthusiastic students and a sizable audience. The celebration included a composite programme of Tagore songs, short discussions on Tagore and recitation.

RSS adheres to Rabindranath Tagore's philosophy of life and draws its inspiration from his creativity in various fields such as literature and music. The programme was divided into four sections.

The first half highlighted romantic love and Tagore's passion for nature and featured a number of patriotic songs such as Ami ki gaan gabo jee, Ami kan pete roi, Amar na bola banir, Hey notun dekha dik arbar and Tumi kon bhangoner pothe. More than 100 singers of the organisation performed Tagore songs to welcome the audience.

The second part emphasised the Nobel laureate's love for his country and had readings from his plays. RSS also arranged a reception programme to celebrate the 83th birth anniversary of eminent cultural activist Kalim Sharafi in the third session.

The fourth session featured songs on different themes such as love and worship. The singers captivated the audience with their melodious presentation. The artistes included Kanchan Mustafa, Makhon Hawlader, Shahnaz Parveen, Mujibul Kaiyum, Golam Hayder, Nahar Jamil, Naima Ali, Lily Islam, Hashi Biswas, Bula Mahmud, Rezwana Choudhury Banya and many others.

Tagore's medley of songs of different moods, varying from solo to chorus, was well appreciated by the audience. Songs such as Shafal koro hey provu, Bhalobashiley jodi bhalo, Jiboney amar joto anando and Shukhey amay rakhbe keno echoed across the auditorium.

Other artistes of the organisation also presented Tagore songs and recited his poems. Solo rendition of songs like Tumi kon kanoner phool, Chiro dibosh nobo, Dur razonir swapno, Ami elam tari darey, Tar hatey chhilo and others also went down well with the audience.

Another function marking the occasion was held at the Bangla Academy. This was a discussion on Rabindranath Tagore, titled 'Awareness of History in Tagore's Works' at the Bangla Academy seminar room. Director general of Bangla Academy Dr Abul Kalam Manzur Morshed delivered the welcome speech and the academy president, Dr Wakil Ahmed was the chairperson. Professor Zubaida Gulshan Ara and Professor Abdul Mannan Sayed also spoke on the occasion. The session was followed by an evening of Rabindra Sangeet.
