Theatrical group Brittopat observes its birthday

On March 12, Brittopat, a theatre group, organised its third birthday anniversary at Nat Mondol, the theatre hall of Dhaka University. Renowned drama personalities of the country such as Mamunur Rashid, Selim Al Deen, Dr Afsar Ahmed and others were present at the function.

Dr Afsar Ahmed presided over the discussion programme. Mamunur Rashid was the chief guest while Selim Al Deen was the special guest. Tanvir Ahmed Sydney, an active member of Brittopat, was the host of the discussion.

Aktaruzzaman, the chief of Somay Shankskritik Goshthi, encouraged the group members to do better in the near future.

Dr Rashid Harun, Chairman of the department of Drama and Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University, said, ' The bulk of the group members are my students. I think they have got the potential to undertake quality productions.'

Dr Lutfor Rahman, a professor of the same department, in his speech also hoped better future for Brittopat.

Eminent playwright Selim Al Deen said, ' After our teacher Muneir Chaudhury and his contemporary playwrights it is difficult to measure the contribution of contemporary theatre personalities to this art form. But we have had to face many crises. I hope that the young talents will overcome all odds and take theatre a long way.'

Mamunur Rashid, President of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF), said, 'The present world is beset with problems. The artistes can also influence society through their work.'

The President of the session, Dr Afsar Ahmed said, 'I have been associated with Brittopat from its inception. I am very glad that my students are doing something remarkable, especially in the case of newly introduced ethnic theatre concept. I hope for the best for the group.'

After the speeches, Brittopat staged Walmikoy, directed by Shahin Rahman. This sixth play of Brittopat is in the genre of ethnic theatre. Tanvir Ahmed Sydney's script portrays the oppression of the tribal people of the Southeast region of the country at the hands of the ruling Bangali community.
