Three Bangladeshi plays to participate at NSD Festival

For the first time three Bangladeshi stage plays are participating at the National School of Drama Festival (NSD) known asBharat Rang Mahautsava, which is incidentally, the biggest theatre festival in South Asia. The participating plays areShonai Bibir Pala, a Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) production,Raarang, an Aranyak Natya Dal production andBehular Bhashan, a production of Department of Theatre and Music, Dhaka University.

Each year NSD theatre festival begins on January 3, in Delhi in which selected Indian as well as theatre troupes from other countries, stage plays.

During her Dhaka visit, NSD Chairperson Amal Allana watched a few of the Bangladeshi stage plays. She was impressed with the contemporary Bangladeshi theatre scene. That appreciation became apparent when NSD selection committee officially invited three plays from Bangladesh, while only one troupe from other foreign countries will participate in the festival which will continue from January 3 to 12, 2006.

CAT will stage Shonai Bibir Pala directed by Kamaluddin Nilu on the inaugural day at Sriram Centre, Delhi. Later the group will stage the same play at Bangalore on January 6, where 10 selected plays of the festival will be staged.

Earlier CAT participated three times -- in 2002, 2004 and 2005 at the NSD Festival.

Aranyak Natya Dal will stage Raarang on the following day of the inauguration at Abhimanch Auditorium at NSD campus. Mamunur Rashid is dramatist as well as director of Raarang.

Behular Bhashan directed by Syed Jamil Ahmed will be staged on January 10 at Circulation Unit, Delhi.
