Muhammad Khasru, the pioneer of the film society movement of Bangladesh, was under the spotlight recently. The occasion was a discussion programme on Muhammad Khasru's bookBangladesher Chalachitra Shangshad Andolon(Film Society Movement of Bangladesh). The participants recalled his tremendous contribution in attracting the younger generation to cinema and creating a favourable climate for good films. The programme, held at the RC Majumdar auditorium of Dhaka University, was arranged jointly by Prantik Cultural Centre and Bangla Film Society.

Among the discussants were eminent and promising film makers and film society activists such as Manzare Hasin Murad, Junayed Ahmed Halim, Zahidur Rahim Anjan, Shartanu Majumder, Mustafa Sarwar Faruquie and Mainuddin Khaled. However, according to some of the participants Khasru was not present at the discussion programme because he prefers to keep a low profile.

The speakers focussed on the contribution of Khasru to cinema. As they pointed out, Muhammad Khasru was the main driving force behind the then Pakistan's Film Society way back in 1963. Since then he sought to inspire the young generation to watch good movies and inform the youth about globalisation through films. He expanded this movement throughout the country in the 1970s and formed the Bangladesh Federation of Film Society.

In addition, he initiated the Bangladesh National Film Archive. He is also the successful editor of film society-based magazines such as Dhrupadi and Chalachitrapatra.

Among the 19 essays of the new book, 11 are on different issues of film societies. These articles had been published in those two film society-based magazines. The others articles are also on film-oriented issues such as a tribute to Satyajit Ray, comparison of films of home and abroad, history of Bangladesh film societies, media aggression and the role of Bangladeshi movies in the globalisation scenario.
