13 hurt as JCD men clash at DU

Of the injured, Anwar Hossain Tarafdar Amit, a 2nd year student of Pali and Sanskrit department, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

DU authorities have formed a five-member probe committee to find out those responsible for the clashes.

The committee, headed by Pro-vice-chancellor Prof AFM Yusuf, has been asked to submit an interim report within two days and a full report within 15 days, said Proctor Prof AK Firoz Ahmed.

He said authorities would take stern actions against those responsible for destroying congenial academic atmosphere.

The clash erupted at around 11:15am when some 20-25 JCD activists of Zia Hall launched an attack on the fellow activists of Suryasen Hall with sticks and machete leaving Amit with serious injuries, witnesses said.

Suryasen Hall activists then launched a counter attack on them.

The clash took place as a sequel between two JCD activists Toriqul Islam Torique of Suryasen Hall and Tareq Mojumdar of Zia Hall over alleged teasing of a female student of Philosophy department.

The other clash occurred at around 1:15pm when a group of Suryasen Hall JCD men beat up a fellow activist of Zia Hall in front of their hall, witnesses said.

Zia Hall JCD President Alamgir Hossain Sohan alleged that Suryasen Hall JCD cadres led by its President Rezaul Karim Reza and General Secretary Abdul Karim Sarker launched the attack without any provocation.

Karim Sarker, however, blamed the Zia hall JCD leaders for the attack.

DU unit JCD President Hasan Mamun told The Daily Star that a non-political incident has been given political colour.

A tense situation was prevailing and additional police were deployed at two halls to avert any further untoward incident.
