2 students die in road accidents

Staff Correspondent reports: A Dhaka College student was killed in a road accident in front of the Dhakeshwari temple at Lalbagh in the city yesterday.

The dead was identified as Quamrul Hasan Prince, student of first year honours of Sociology Department of Dhaka College.

The accident occurred when a Dhamrai-bound passenger mini-bus ran over Quamrul at 1:30pm while he was crossing the road at Lalbagh.

He died on the spot. A library card of a student named Masum of Kobi Nazrul Govt. College was found in his pocket.

Following the accident, the agitated people put up barricades on Bakshibazar and Dhakeshwari roads and damaged several mini-buses.

The people withdrew the barricades 2:45pm when local lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu assured them of making speed breakers on the road immediately.

Another unidentified person age about 30 was killed at Shanirakhra near a filling station on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

He died on the spot when a bus hit him from behind at around 1:30am.

Police sent the two bodies to the Sir Salimullah Medical College for autopsy.

UNB from Chittagong adds: A female student of Chittagong University was killed in the port city yesterday as she fell under the university train.

Police and witnesses said the death of Sabina Yasmin, 23, a third-year student of Bengali Department of the university, triggered an angry protest by the CU students.

She was run over by her university train, which shuttles between the varsity and the port city, near the CU gate No-1 at about 9:30am.

"Sabina fell under the train while getting onto it for going to the city," says a spot account of the tragic accident.

On information, police rushed to the spot and sent her body to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue.

Enraged by the death of Sabina, the fellow students staged demonstrations in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. The protestors demanded their safe travel by the train.
