2nd housing project for journos under consideration: PM

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday told the Jatiya Sangsad that the government formed the Sixth Wage Board for the journalists and employees of newspapers and news agencies to enhance their salaries and other benefits.

"The Wage Board is likely to submit its recommendations within the next nine months", she told the JS while replying to a question from Jamaat lawmaker Miah Golam Parwar.

She said late president Ziaur Rahman allotted lands in Mirpur for the journalists, who have now been residing there along with their families. The second housing project for the journalists at Mirpur is under the active consideration of the government, she said.

She told the House that arrangements have been made for residential accommodation of the members of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) near the Kanchpur Bridge. Besides, she said, the government has given two acres of land of over Tk 20 crore at the current rate to the National Press Club.

The government has also allotted lands for solving the residential problems of the journalists of Chittagong, she said, adding that allotment of lands and donations of cash money were also made for the different district level press clubs.
