3-day regional seminar on Islam begins today
Centre for National and Regional Studies (CNRS), involved in research and studies on issues of national and regional interest, will organise the seminar to be attended by more than 300 participants.
Former chief adviser to caretaker government Justice Latifur Rahman will inaugurate the seminar at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
Southeast University Vice-Chancellor Dr M Shamsher Ali will present the keynote paper at the seminar.
Objective of the seminar is to highlight Islam as a religion of peace, progress and harmony, and also to uphold Bangladesh as a moderate Muslim country fostering the spirit of communal harmony and tolerance.
Noted Islamic thinkers including Justice Dr Javid Iqbal of Pakistan, Mohammad Zubair Hassen of Sri Lanka, Prof Dato Dr Jamil Osman and Prof Dr Mohd Masum Billah of Malaysia, Maulana Aqeel Gharavi and Maulana Syed Mahmud Mehdi of India, Dr Soherin Saleheen and Dr Shamsul Anuar Mohd Halip and Taun Hj Hashim Kamaruddin of Singapore are expected to participate in the conference.
Bangladeshi participants include former Chief Election Commissioner Justice Mohammed Abdur Rouf, former director general of Islamic Foundation Syed Ashraf Ali, Moulana Mohiuddin Khan of IOJ, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad of Masjid Council for Community Development, former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Dr Emajuddin Ahmed, former secretary Shah Abdul Hannan, Pro-VC of Chittagong University Dr Muhammad Shamsuddin and Imam of Dhanmondi Takwa Masjid Syed Zulfikar Zahur.
