33 killed in road accidents

Our CU Correspondent reports: Three people of a family were killed and another injured in a road accident at Madam Bibir Hat on Dhaka-Chittagong highway yesterday afternoon.

The victims were identified as Mohammed Shahrier, 40, his wife Yasmin Akhter, 35, and their son Farman, 4. Name of the injured child of the same family could not be known immediately.

Sources and witnesses said the accident occurred when a Feni-bound coach of Star Line Service and a Chittagong-bound microbus collided head-on at Chairman Ghat under Sitakunda Police Station at around 3:00pm.

Shahrier, also owner of the microbus, died on the spot while Yasmin and Farman died on the way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), sources said.

The injured child of Shahrier was admitted to Holy Crescent Hospital in the city where he was undergoing treatment under critical condition.

Police detained the bus but the bus driver managed to flee.

Our Correspondent from Gaibandha adds: Three people were killed and 10 others injured when a microbus rammed a rickshaw van at Boalia on Bogra-Rangpur highway on Thursday night.

The deceased were identified as van passengers Amir Hossain, 60, Haripad Das, 50 and his son Chaitanya, 15, all hailed from Amgaon village.

Local sources said the accident took place at Boalia when the microbus driver lost his control over the steering, killing Amir on the spot.

Van passengers Haripad and Chaitanya were admitted to Govindaganj health complex where they succumbed to their injuries. The injured were admitted to hospital.

Police seized the microbus, but the driver managed to flee.

Our Correspondent from Sirajganj adds: At least six people were killed and 47 others injured in a road accident on Sirajganj-Kazipur highway near Gozaria Bridge at Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district on last Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Sharif, 27, Sultan, 32, Minu, 26, Monju, 28, Golap, 35, and Fulchand, 29.

The injured were taken to Kazipur Health Complex, Sirajganj Sadar Hospital and different clinics in the town.

Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at 9:30pm, when a Kazipur-bound bus with some garment workers onboard coming from Dhaka skidded off the road and turned turtle, killing three passengers on the spot. Of the injured, two people died on the way to hospital, while another succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

On information, Kazipur police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to Sirajganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

UNB from Comilla adds: Seven people, including six expatriates, were killed and 25 others injured in a road accident on Thursday on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Chandina in Comilla on their way home after their long stay abroad.

The sources said that a minibus was carrying 13 expatriates to Comilla and Chittagong from Dhaka after their return from Qatar and Dubai when the fatal accident occurred.

'A Dhaka-bound bus of S Alam Service, coming from the opposite direction, rammed the minibus at about 1:00pm,' says a policeman, quoting witnesses.

One of the deceased was identified as Aminul Islam, 30, son of Nazir Ahmed Majumder of Deokamta village at Chandina. Aminul might be the driver of the minibus, police said.

Of the injured, nine were the passengers of the minibus while 16 others of the bus of S Alam service.

Among the injured, four were sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital while one was admitted to Chandina Upazila Health Complex.

One injured expatriate, Shakhawat Hossain of Brahmanpara in Comilla district, said they reached Zia International Airport by a flight of Qatar Airlines at 7:00am on Thursday from Qatar and Dubai.

'We (expatriates) were supposed to be sent home (in Chittagong and Comilla) by a bus of Neptune Paribahan from Dhaka, but people of Qatar Airlines boarded us onto the minibus,' he told journalists.

He said except him, other12 expatriates were going to their village home in Chittagong.

UNB from Gazipur adds: At least 10 people were killed and 28 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Nayanpur of Sreepur upazila in the district last Monday.

Police said the deceased were identified as Belal Hossain, 25, Bidya Mia, 24, Mohsin, 19, Khairul, 20, Sohag, 19, Shahidul, 23, Atiqul, 37, Khokon, 22, Qazem, 26 and an unidentified woman, about 27.

Four of the deceased - Belal, Bidya, Mohsin and Khairul - were workers of Nawab Abdul Malek Jute Mills at Kanchpur in Narayanganj district.

Witnesses said the accident took place on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at about 10:30am when a Dhaka-bound bus of Dream Paribahan from Mymensingh collided with a Sherpur-bound bus that was carrying the workers.

The injured were admitted to Sreepur Health Complex, where three people died at about 11:00am.

The bodies have been taken to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

UNB from Cox's Bazar adds: Three people were killed and 15 injured when a microbus rammed six rickshaws on Kolatoli bypass road near the sea beach on Thursday night.

Locals said a pedestrian and a rickshaw puller died on the spot when the accident took place at about 10:30am. Their identity could not be known immediately.

Rickshaw passenger Aminur Rahman 28, died when he was taken to Sadar hospital. Aminur Rahman along with his nine associates went to visit Cox's Bazar sea beach from Uttar Bashabo of Dhaka.

Of the injured, 10 were admitted to Sadar hospital and five were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Police seized the microbus but could not arrest the driver.

UNB, from Habiganj adds: A college student was killed and two others were injured in an accident at Alampur on Nabiganj-Habiganj road on Wednesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Ashiam, 18, a 1st year HSC student of local Brindaban Government College.

Witnesses said a motorcycle, carrying three classmates, fell into a roadside ditch after hitting a rickshaw at about 10:00am, injuring them critically.

Injured Ashiam, Uzzal, 18, and Shakil, 17, were rushed to Habiganj Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

Later, Ashiam succumbed to injuries while being transferred to Dhaka.
