5 killed in road accidents

Our Staff Correspondent reports: Sadrul Haque, 50, a traffic constable was killed when a passenger bus knocked him from behind when he tried to stop the bus as it ignored the traffic signal at Bailey Road point in the city yesterday.

Ramna police seized the bus and arrested the driver.

Our Gazipur correspondent adds: Two people were killed and five others injured when a sand-laden truck hit a Sripur-bound passenger tempo from the opposite direction at 9:00pm on Saturday at Dangnahati area of Sripur.

Schoolteacher Sultan Uddin, 48, was killed immediately after the accident as the tempo caught fire following the hit while sand trader Ainuddin, 42, succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.

Five injured were rushed to the Gazipur Sadar Hospital. Of them, Taizuddin was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

The injured said the accident occurred as there was no headlight of the truck.

A case was filed with Sripur Police Station in this regard.

Our Correspondent from Sirajganj reports: An unidentified man was killed as he fell from the roof of a passenger bus bound for Rangpur from Dhaka at Sayedabad Goalchattar area on Dhaka-Rangpur highway in Sirajganj yesterday.

Identity of the dead could not be known. Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.

UNB from Bandarban adds: At least one person was killed and 30 others were injured in two road accidents in the hill district yesterday.

Police said a truck carrying food grains turned turtle on Chittagong-Bandarban road near Manurtek at 8:00am leaving its worker Abu Taleb dead on the spot.

In another accident, at least 30 people, including 10 women and children, were injured as a jeep with some 40 passengers crashed on Bandarban-Ruma road in Betchara area at 11:00am.

The injured were admitted to Sadar Hospital where condition of eight was stated to be critical.
