6 killed in road accidents

Our Staff correspondent reports: Two people were killed and two others injured in a road accident at Mohammadpur in the city yesterday.

The dead were identified as Swapan, 35, a cobbler, and a rickshawpuller whose identity could not be known immediately. The injured were Mustafa, 40, and Nunnabi, 12 .

Witnesses said , the incident took place at around 12:30 pm when a sand-laden Gabtali-bound truck turned upside down at Basila embankment at Mohammadpur as its driver lost control over its steering and fell into a ditch after ramming two shops.

The accident occurred when Swapan was working and the rickshaw-puller taking tea inside the shop.

Later, police seized the truck but both the driver and helper managed to escape.

The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

Our Correspondent from Satkhira adds: Two people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in the district yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Tarapada Sarkar, 45, son of Shibapada Sarkar of village Sajhhiara in Tala upazila and Shamim, 25, son of Joynal Hossain of Itagachha in the town.

The injured Harun-or-Rashid, Shafiqul Islam and Insar Ali were admitted to Satkhira hospital in critical condition.

Quoting local people police said Tara Pada, a shrimp trader, was killed as a trolley knocked him down while he returning home from Kalaroa riding a motorcycle.

He was taken to Khulna Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Shamim was run over by a truck at Itagachha intersection in the town while he was crossing the Satkhira-Kaligonj road after saying Zohr prayers from a local mosque. He died on the spot.

Meanwhile, three people were injured when a motorbike hit a passer-by at Bhabanipur in Sadar upazila.

The injured were admitted to Satkhira Hospital.

A correspondent from Gazipur: A pedestrian was run over by a speedy truck on Dhaka Tangail highway in Gazipur yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Abu Sayem, 21, of Roumari upazila under Kurigram district.

The accident occurred when a truck hit Sayem at around 11:00am leaving him dead on the spot.

The body was sent to Gazipur Hospital for autopsy.
