6 killed in road crashes

A CORRESPONDENT from Comilla reports: Three female passengers, including one young girl, were killed and two others seriously injured in a road accident at Kalakachua area on Dhaka-Chittagong highway yesterday.

The victims were identified as Rahima Begum, 45, wife of Asmat Ali, Afia Khatun, 44, wife of Khorshed Alam and Shyamali, 14, daughter of Swapan Mia of village Doulatpur under Comilla Sadar upazila.

Witnesses and police said the accident occurred when an unidentified passenger bus hit a Chandina-bound auto-rickshaw from Comilla at Kalakachua area under Burichong upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at around 11.30am.

Rahima and Afia died on the spot while Shyamali succumbed to her injuries in Comilla Combined Military Hospital (CCMH). Ishaque, 25, son of Swapan Mia and Bhanu Bibi, 33, daughter of Iskendar Ali , of village Doulatpur were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Drivers of the auto-rickshaw and the bus managed to escape along with the vehicles.

A correspondent from Pabna adds: Two young brothers were killed in a road accident at Arambaria in Ishwardi upazila in the district on Saturday night.

Police and locals said Shadhin Kumar Pal, 34, and his younger brother Nikhil Kumar Pal, sons of Rishipada Pal of Arambaria village were injured when an overloaded truck rammed their motorcycle.

They were returning home from Arambaria Bazar riding the motorcycle. Local people rushed them to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared them to dead.

UNB from Khulna says: A minor boy was crushed under the wheels of a minibus at Gutudia village in Dumuria upazila on Khulna-Satkhira highway yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Omi, 7, son of Rabiul Islam of Gutudia.

Police said the accident took place at about 2:30pm when Omi was crossing the highway. The killer minibus managed to escape the scene.

Transport movement was disrupted on the highway for 30 minutes as angry people put up barricade on the road protesting the incident.
