8 killed, 88 hurt in road mishaps

Our correspondent from Kishoreganj reports: Three people were killed and five others critically injured in a road accident on Bhairab-Kishoreganj highway at Konapara in Bajitpur upazila under the district yesterday.

The dead were identified as Abdul Hamid ,75, Abdur Rashid, 40, and Liton, 5, of village Konapara at Bajitpur upazila. Five others were rushed to Bajitpur Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.

Police and locals said the accident occurred when a Kishoreganj-bound bus coming from Chittagong collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction at about 5:00pm leaving one bus passenger dead on the spot and seven others injured critically.

Of the critically injured, two succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital.

Unb from Manikganj adds: Two people were killed and 40 injured as a bus swerved off Dhaka-Aricha highway and fell into a ditch in Muljan area yesterday.

Police said a Barisal-bound bus from Dhaka fell into a roadside ditch as the driver lost control over the steering at 11:00am. A seven-year-old girl, Tuni, died on the spot while an unidentified woman succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital.

Seven of the injured were rushed to Sadar Hospital while about a dozen others sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The bodies were sent to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.

Our staff correspondent from Chittagong says: Two pedestrians were run over by a speeding truck and bus in separate road accidents in the city yesterday

A speeding truck ran over Nazrul Islam, 30, a pedestrian, when he was crossing the busy Badamtali Road in Agrabad at around 9.30am. He breathed his last at around 11.45am at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), police said.

Meanwhile, Sanowara Begum, 60, another pedestrian, was run over by a bus while she was crossing the road at Muradpur under Panchlaish Police Station at around 10.00am. She succumbed to her injuries on the way to the CMCH.

Our Correspondent from Khagrachhari adds: One person was killed and three others injured in a road accident at Guimara in the district yesterday.

The accident occurred when driver of a Khagrachhari-bound truck lost his control over the steering and hit a hill leaving its helper dead on the spot, local people said.

The dead was identified as Faruq, 25, from Barisal. The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.

BDNEWS from Jhenidah adds: At least 40 people were injured in a road accident in Jhenaidah yesterday.

Police said, the accident occurred when driver of a Jhenidah-bound bus lost control over the steering and rammed a tree.

Of the injured, 31 were sent to Jhenidah Hospital, while eight were admitted to Kaliganj Hospital.

"The bus crumbled into pieces and it had mechanical flaws," police said.

A case has been filed with the local police station in this connection.
