ACC for easy pension system for teachers

In a meeting yesterday, ACC Commissioner Prof Moniruzzaman Miah suggested preparing a computerised database of the retired government teachers to enable the officials concerned to know six months before a teacher's retirement and take necessary steps to complete the process for timely payment of pension.

Prof Miah also suggested forming a special cell to work out a system to facilitate timely payment to the teachers through their bank accounts and thus spare them the trouble of coming to the Shiksha Bhaban in Dhaka.

Education Secretary Momtazul Islam, Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Dilara Hafiz, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Asif Ali, Comptroller General of Accounts M Sanaul Haq and other high officials were present at the meeting held at the conference room of the CAG office.

There is large-scale corruption and ways to scale it down have to be found out, Miah said.

Referring to the sufferings of government teachers in getting due retirement benefits, Miah said, "I have seen a newspaper report that a teacher died before completion of the process of files for his pension."

Officials of the education department told the ACC officials that they had already taken some steps to make speedy payment of pension to the teachers.

They also mentioned some problems regarding absorption of non-government teachers into government educational institutions.

Prof Miah, who is head of the Corruption Prevention Wing of the ACC, earlier held a series of meetings with different government offices and suggested measures to curb corruption.
