Accommodation crisis halts recruitment in DMP

Despite government approval for setting up of 12 new police stations in Dhaka, the DMP could not launch those due to lack of space or any building to house the police stations.

DMP Commissioner SM Mizanur Rahman told The Daily Star yesterday that the process of recruitment has begun and will be completed in phases, but they are facing difficulties in accommodating them.

"Where will we arrange their sitting arrangement? We've approval for setting up of 12 new police stations, but don't have space," he said.

With the new stations, the total number of police stations will be raised to 40 and another 11 will be set up later as per the organogram.

The cabinet committee on law and order on May 22 approved massive reforms to police organogram suggesting an increase of over 26,000 men with major increase in officer ranks.

It also introduced separate police unit for investigation and maintaining law and order at each PS.

The cabinet committee also made massive change in the DMP organogram.

As per the new organogram, the number of additional commissioner will be increased from one to three while five will be appointed in new posts of joint commissioners. Three of them have already been appointed.

Number of additional deputy commissioners (ADC) will be increased from 13 to 37, deputy commissioners (DC) from 13 to 24, senior assistant commissioner (AC) from 19 to 64, and AC from 74 to 118.

Besides, number of inspector will be increased from 237 to 325, sub-inspector from 1302 to 1387, ASI from 375 to 1275 and constable from 15903 to 16003.
