Al to bring corrupt officials, companies to book if voted to power
Awami League organised the seminar titled 'Power and Energy Sector: Success, Failure and Our Duties' at the National Press Club in the city.
Presenting a keynote paper on energy sector, Dr Mohammad Hossain Monsur of Dhaka University put some recommendations to improve the energy sector including reorganisation of the administration, building a corruption free, fair and accountable administration.
He suggested to reduce dependency on foreign companies to explore natural resources, use modern machineries in resources exploration, make decision to explore coal considering environment and people's life, encourage foreign investment, ensure economic security of the foreign companies, keep fuel price stable for the overall development of the energy sector.
Nuh-Ul-Alam Lenin, information and research secretary of AL, presented a keynote power on power sector. He said the BNP-Jamaat alliance government has failed to launch any new project in the power sector in last four years. Due to lack of electricity the agricultural, industrial and other productions have been affected badly that ultimately affected the economic growth rate, he added.
He said due to shortage of power and energy, many foreign investments have been hampered.
AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil said power and energy sector are the most important sectors for any nation's development.
He said if they are voted to power again they will consider about gas export after reserving gas for the country for 50 years.
AL Presidium Member Tofail Ahmed said due to the alliance government's huge corruption in the power sector, they could not add one MW electricity to the national greed.
Sheikh Selim said alliance government's immense corruption, politicisation, misrule and nepotism have damaged the power and energy sector completely.
He said with the direction of the prime minister the present government has increased the production cost of 210-mega watt electricity at Shiddhirganj greed by Tk 100 crore.
He said the government has increased the cost to put it into their pocket.
Prof Badrul Imam of Dhaka University said mismanagement in the power and energy sector has totally halted the probability of improving the sector.
The government has crippled the Bapex and the NIKO is a burden for the nation, he observed.
Former energy secretary M Akmol Hossain said during the AL regime there was coordination among all the ministries, but now there is no coordination of the power and energy ministries with other ministries and for this the government could not bring any success in this sector.
