The Awami League yesterday opposed the move to rent barge-mounted power plants, saying that the government is going to rent the power plants at a cost of 150 million dollars as it failed to resolve the power crisis.

In a statement, AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil blamed the energy ministry for the persisting power crisis.

He said the government is taking such a decision as the World Bank has expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of transparency in setting up 45 power plants.

"The people will not accept the government's move to take a loan of 150 million dollars from the World Bank to cover up their failure in the power sector," Jalil said.

He claimed that power generation had gone up to 4005 MW during the Awami League rule, posting a growth rate of 5.5.
