The Bangladesh Association for International Recruiting Agencies (Baira) yesterday proposed that it would set up offices and help create database to monitor the overall situation of female workers abroad.

At a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment, Baira President Md Mosharraf Hossain MP said there is a huge demand for female workers in the Middle East countries.

The offices will take care of the female migrant workers and help solve any dispute or crises, he added.

He also proposed sending more female workers, saying that their migration cost is much lower than that for the male workers. Moreover, they can save and send more remittance to the country, but they need more training and logistic supports.

Mosharraf Hossain also demanded that the government allow all the recruiting agencies to send female workers. Presently, only four agencies can send female workers abroad.

In response to the Baira suggestions, State Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Major (Retd.) Quamrul Islam said the overall social situation does not favour the women's migration, according to a meeting source.

The media reports on the abuse of female migrant workers also have a negative impact on female migration, he said.

The committee members called for the modernisation of syllabus and training institutions that trains the aspirant workers.

It suggested that the ministry and Baira should prepare separate recommendations in this regard and place those in the next meeting.

Parliamentary Standing Committee Chairman Nazir Hossain MP presided over the meeting.

Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary AKM Shamsuddin was also present.
