BCL calls strike Apr 24

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of main opposition Awami League (AL), has called strike at all educational institutions across the country on April 24 to protest the killing of a leader who opposed the distortion of the history of liberation war by a college teacher.

The strike was also called in protest against police repression on BCL leaders and activists including Mahmud Hasan Ripon, president of the BCL, while staging a sit-in outside the Prime Minister's Office in the city yesterday. At least 30 of them were injured in the incident.

The BCL announced the strike at a press conference on Dhaka University (DU) campus yesterday.

Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton, general secretary of the BCL, read out a written statement at the press conference.

He said Abdur Rahim Akash, assistant secretary of Shaheed Suhrawardy College unit of BCL, succumbed to his injuries on April 18.

Roton said Akash protested falsehoods of a teacher who told in the classroom that former president Ziaur Rahman had declared the independence of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971.

The BCL will also stage demonstrate on April 23 on the same issue, Roton added.

M A Latif, uncle of Akash who attended the press conference, said he would file a murder case with Sutrapur Police Station against the JCD cadres and the teacher in this connection.
