BDR, BSF agree to reduce border tension, crimes

The four-day border conference between Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) concluded at Shiliguri in the Indian state of West Bengal yesterday agreeing to cooperate actively to reduce border tension and combat border crimes.

Firing, killing and injury of civilian and unarmed Bangladeshis by the Indian border guards and miscreants as well as border violation and abduction of Bangladesh nationals by the BSF and Indian citizens and push-in of Bangla-speaking Indian citizens to Bangladesh figured in the talks.

The conference discussed illegal construction of barbed wire fence as well as roads, bridges, establishments and plantation of tea saplings within 150 yards of the frontier by the Indian authorities, and the BSF obstruction to development and routine works inside the Bangladesh border areas.

Checking of smuggling of goods, including arms and ammunition, explosives, phensidyl and drugs as well as security related issues, illegal stay of Indian trucks at the Bangladesh land ports and installing border pillars on 35 kilometers of international boundary identified by joint survey in Panchagarh of Bangladesh also figured in the discussion.

The two sides agreed to extend active cooperation to each other for reducing border tension and combating all kinds of border crimes.

Deputy Director General of BDR Brig SM Golam Rabbani and IG of BSF (North Bengal Frontier) SR Tewari led their respective sides at the conference held in a very cordial atmosphere, said a BDR press release.
