A bus ran over a traffic sergeant yesterday killing him on the spot at the city's Azampur area in Uttara.

Sajjadur Rahman, 31, a sergeant of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) traffic (north zone), hailed from Soratala village in Narail.

Witnesses said the sergeant was on duty near Azampur foot over-bridge around 8:30am when a Netrakona-bound bus from Mohakhali crushed him.

The police found the bus abandoned at Boardbazar in Tongi. Both the driver and the conductor had fled.

Sajjadur's body was taken to his home village for burial following his namaz-e-janaza at Rajarbagh Police Lines.

He left behind his wife and a baby daughter Shahshi.
