Cargo sinks in Karnaphuli

All the crews of the cargo ship named Diamond of Shimulia swam ashore following a clash with a container ship Quota Ratna at around 10:30pm, according to sources.

The container ship left the port channel after hitting the cargo ship without informing the port authority.

The cargo ship had been carrying around 450 tons of fertiliser, most of which was washed away in the river. Some of the goods were also looted by unscrupulous people, the source said.

The small cargo ship was later tagged to shore by a tugboat of the Chittagong Port Authority.

The source alleged that the restriction of moving small ships during the movement of big ships in the channel is frequently being violated.

The restriction on the movement of small ships at night is also not being followed properly, the source added.
