Cash, valuables worth Tk 7 lakh looted from city house

A gang of robbers broke into a house at Ahmednagar in Paikpara in the city in the early hours of yesterday and made off with cash and valuables worth Tk 7.20 lakh.

The robbery took place at the house of MA Matin, former joint director of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation.

About seven robbers broke open the main gate of the house at around 4:15am and held the family members hostage at gunpoint, police said. The gang took away Tk 40,000, 38 tolas of gold ornaments, one licensed revolver, 26 bullets and six mobile phone sets.

The police said the robbers were also repeatedly wanted to know where they have kept Tk 12 lakh.

The robbers ransacked the furniture of the house to find out the money and also beat up Matin's son Abir, a college student, after failing to get the money, family members said.

A case has been filed with Mirpur police station, but no-one was arrested.
