Major changes in the administration of the Jamuna Oil Company Limited (JOCL) and the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) in Chittagong have taken place in the wake of September 20 incident of diesel spill from a reserve tank of the oil company.

Several top officials of both the state-run organisations were transferred on Monday, sources said.

Ahmed Jamal Khan Chowdhury, managing director of theJOCL, was transferred to the LP Gas Plant as its managing director.

He was replaced by BPC Senior General Manager (Operations) Mohammad Ali, who earlier served in the same post until being withdrawn, reportedly on charge of corruption, in May last year, sources said.

LP Gas Managing Director Md Rezaul Alam was made BPC senior general manager (commerce and operations).

JOCL General Manager (Marketing) Abul Khaer, who had already been served a show cause notice in connection with the diesel spill, was transferred to the BPC as special officer-in-charge.

Meghna Petroleum General Manager (Finance) Nizam Uddin replaced Abul Khaer.

In the BPC, Senior GM (Marketing) Aminul Haq Majumder replaced Senior GM (Finance) Md Shahjahan Molla who was transferred as senior GM (Accounting) while Senior GM (Accounting) RM Jahangir was made senior GM (Marketing).

Earlier, nine officials of the oil company faced punitive action for their negligence in connection with the diesel spill.

On September 20, a huge amount of diesel worth around Tk 4 crore spilled from reserve tank No. 6 at the JOCL main terminal at Patenga when the Eastern Refinery Limited, the country's lone oil refining centre run by the BPC, was supplying the diesel to Jamuna through a one-km pipeline.

The BPC formed a four-member committee headed by its Senior General Manager (Operations) Mohammad Ali to probe the incident. On the basis of the probe report, punitive measures were taken against nine officials and employees of JOCL on September 22.

Five of them -- JOCL Senior Operations Officer Abul Basher, Gauge-men Saber Ahmed and Nurun Nabi, Operators Abul Kalam and Salauddin Quader -- were suspended while Jamuna Terminal Manager Shahiduddin Ahmed, Operations Controller Engineer Jasim Uddin and Deputy Manager Golam Rob Molla were withdrawn from their posts and General Manager Abul Khaer was served a show cause notice, sources said.
