Speakers at a protest rally yesterday demanded compensation from Niko before they leave the country and also trial of corrupt officials, including former energy minister Mosharraf Hossain.

They were speaking at the rally at Muktangon in the city, organised by Gonomukti and Jatiya Sampad Rokkha Sammilita Andolon, a platform to protect national assets.

They said that Niko had been planning to flee from the country without giving compensation of damaging gas, houses, trees and domestic animals at Tengratila that worth Tk 4000 crore.

They mentioned that earlier American Company Occidental caused damage worth around Tk 15000 crore at Magurchara but managed to evade compensation and escaped the country by exchanging ownership to another American company, Unocol.

They criticised the government for not taking any action to realise compensation from Niko and to try the corrupt officials.

They threatened the government that if it tries to protect Niko, then the government will be held responsible and put on trial.
