Concern over harassment of Indian diplomat's wife

Some 100 teachers of universities, including Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Jahangirnagar in a joint statement yesterday expressed concern over the harassment of Rupa Chakraborti, wife of Indian diplomat Sarbajit Chakraborti, says a press release.

They also demanded punishment to the persons responsible for the incident. They said Rupa was harassed by the Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan Shah Alam and his associates on Thursday.

They protested and condemned the incident. "We believe that the image of the country has been tarnished following the incident." They said it will damage the friendly relationship with the neighbouring country.

They urged the government to bring the culprits to books.

Prof SA Tarafdar, Prof Rafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, Khan Firoz Box, Nilima Mustafiz, Sunirmal Sen signed the press release.

Meanwhile, Justice KM Sobhan, Advocate MA Bari, Dr Neem Chandra Bhowmik, Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder, Advocate KM Saifuddin, Advocate Mahbub-E-Alam, Mohammad Mohsin Rashid, AFM Mesbahuddin, Advocate MK Rahman, Md Nurul Alam, Md Abdul Mubarak, Qadiruzzaman, Dr Saiful Alam and Moniruzzaman Munir of Bangladesh-Bharat Shampriti Parishad condemned the harassment of the Indian diplomat's wife.

Bangladesh National Women's Lawyers Association (BNWLA) also condemned the harassment of Rupa Chakraborti.

BNWLA demanded proper investigation into the incident.
