Cop mugger caught red-handed

The constable identified as Shah Alam is a wireless operator of the newly formed Shahbagh Police Station.

Identifying him as a detective, Shah Alam stopped the rickshaw of the couple -- Manjurl Hoq, an engineer, and Mariam Jahan -- at Carpet Lane at Segunbagicha at about 8:00pm on Wednesday while they were going to Maghbazar, police said.

He demanded toll from the couple and tried to snatch their money and cellphone as they refused to comply, police said. The locals, hearing the hue and cry, came to the aid of the couple and caught the constable red-handed. They handed Shah Alam to police after a good beating.

Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, said the constable has been suspended and a case filed against him. Shah Alam has also been taken on a two-day remand, he added.
