Crisis in Mitford Hospital takes new turn

The intern doctors had been abstaining from work since June 1 but agreed to postpone the strike for two days as of yesterday after the hospital authority assured them of resolving their problems.

They have been demanding adequate residential facilities, payment of five months' salary arrears and payment of their salaries by the 5th of every month.

Meantime, the authorities arranged temporary solution to their residential problems.

Although the interns' salaries reached the accounts office on June 4, the third and fourth class employees, who works at the accounts section, along with nurses' association threatened that they would not release the salaries until the intern doctors are punished for vandalism and misbehaviour.

"We have decided that we are not going to release the salaries unless the intern doctors are punished," MA Mannan, president of third class employees' association, told The Daily Star yesterday.

Meanwhile, intern doctors said they will talk to the director of the hospital this morning and that if their problems remain unresolved, they would resume their agitation programme.
