Currencies worth Tk 2.45cr seized

Two people were arrested in this connection.

Police said they first arrested Nurul Haq who was bound for Singapore in a Singapore Airlines flight at around 11:45pm.

Following a secret information police and customs officials challenged Nurul at Gate No 10 at around 9:45pm.

They searched his luggage and found Saudi, Omani and Qatari riyal, Kuwaiti diner, UK pounds and Bangladeshi taka.

The currencies were kept hidden inside the clothes and packets of dried fish.

Nurul, who hails from Sreepur in Gazipur, told the police that he had earlier carried currencies eight to nine times.

He said the currencies do not belong to him. A man, whom he does not know, used to send the currencies to him through a driver.

Nurul could not give any further details about the owner, but provided police and customs officials with his mobile phone number.

Later, police called one Anisur over the mobile phone informing him that his carrier had been arrested.

Police also enticed him saying that they would release Nurul, if he (Anisur) provides them with Tk 5 lakh.

As Anisur came and offered the money, police arrested him.

Customs officials said the consignment is the largest currency smuggling incident in recent times.

Police produced the arrestees before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate with a prayer for five days remand.
