Detectives probe cop's link with gang

The name of Inspector Matiur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Nabiganj Police Station in Habiganj, surfaced when a motor garage owner arrested with a stolen car said that the inspector asked him (garage owner) over phone to complete painting of the car hurriedly, police sources said.

Nizam, owner of Monica Motors at Segunbaghica, also told the investigators that Matiur told him that the car belongs to one of his relatives.

The car was sent to him for painting from a car show room at Kakrail and Inspector Matiur owns the show room, used in selling stolen cars, he added.

"The garage owner named the inspector and we are investigating whether the inspector has any link with it," commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police SM Mizanur Rahman told The Daily Star over phone last night.

Inspector Matiur denying the allegation said, "I never made any phone call to any motor garage owner."

When asked about ownership of the car showroom Matiur said he has no car showroom and someone may use his name to tarnish his image.

Meanwhile, police recovered 12 stolen private cars and microbuses from different motor garages in Dhaka, Gazipur, Patuakhali, Jhenaidah and Khulna over the last fortnight.
