Bangladesh's proposal to the United Nations for declaring October 22 as International Safe Highway Day is under consideration of the world body to raise global awareness against road accidents.

"The present government has declared October 22 as the National Safe Highway Day and Bangladesh proposed it to the United Nations for observing the day internationally," Communication Minister Barrister Nazmul Huda said yesterday.

The Minister was addressing a function at Jatiya Press Club for distributing financial assistance among members of the families whose relatives were killed or injured in road accidents.

Dutch-Bangla Bank provided the assistance of Tk 15,000 to each of the families. The bank with the assistance of 'Nirapad Sarak Chai'a road safety organisation--organised the function, said an official handout.

Huda said lack of experience among drivers, fitness problem of the vehicles, careless driving, violation of traffic rules and lack of enforcement of traffic rules by the law enforcers are the main reasons behind road accidents.

Chairman of Nirapar Sarak Chai and film actor Ilias Kanchan, BRTA Chairman Taimur Alam Khandakar and Dutch-Bangla Bank Managing Director M Yasin Ali also spoke.
