Durga Puja begins Oct 9

Sharadiya Durga Utsab, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, will be celebrated in the country from October 9 to 13 keeping pace with the heritage of maintaining religious harmony among people of different communities.

Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad (BPUP) at its general meeting at Dhakeswari National Temple in the city on Tuesday night decided to celebrate the occasion peacefully across the country as the holy Ramadan, the largest religious function the Muslim community, also falls in the same month.

Under the BPUP guideline, Puja Udjapan units across the country will chalk out the programme of the festival in their areas through consultation with the respective local administration, public representatives and political leaders.

The immersion of deity would be held on October 13 though according to calendar the holy Nabami and Dashami Puja will be held on the same day on October 12.

The BPUP called upon the district units to maintain religious gaiety and fervour during celebration of the festival. It asked the units to switch off the microphones during the time of Iftar, Tarabi prayers and Sehri and not to allow anyone to use fireworks or any other materials like explosives at the time of puja or bring out rally.

Parishad President Chitta Ranjan Majumder presided.

Advisor Maj Gen (Retd) CR Dutta was present at the meeting .

General Secretary Joyanta Sen Dipu presented the organisation report while Prof Lalit Mohan Nath, Anil Chandra Nath, CR Sarker, Swapan Kumar Saha and central and district unit leaders spoke at the discussion.

The meeting called upon the government to take necessary steps to maintain law and order across the country during the festival.
