Engrs urged not to compromise on standard in construction work
To underpin his emphasis on the need for quality construction, the President cited the recent collapse of Spectrum Garments building at Savar and another under-construction factory at Mohakhali in the city as classic instances of engineering failure.
He called upon the engineers to come forward to help government achieve the millennium development goals as well as build a rich Bangladesh.

The President was speaking on 'Learning from the Best Practices', a national workshop, organised on the occasion of the 58th founding anniversary of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
Housing and Public Works Minister Mirza Abbas was special guest at the workshop.
The President said that engineers are meritorious and skilled manpower of the country. They have much contribution to planning based on far-reaching thoughts and designs, and in implementing projects and monitoring.
He noted with satisfaction that engineers of this country earned fame at home and abroad by applying their merit and skill.
The President, however, hoped that engineers would make sure that tragic incidents like Spectrum Garment and under-construction factory collapse could not repeat.
He said it is very important to monitor whether quality construction materials are being used in constructing large establishments.
Dr Iajuddin Ahmed asked the engineers to bring the standard of products to the level of 'Zero Defect' and follow 'Lean Production System' successfully so standard products could be produced at minimum production cost.
He thanked the organisers for choosing 'Learning From the Best Practices' as main theme of the workshop and expressed the hope that the engineers would be able to exchange their useful experiences through this meet.
