Enmity between rivals leads to double murder

Unknown assailants opened fire on Murad Hussain Sentu, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader (JCD) and Masum, a metal scrub dealer at Dholai Khal, at midnight in front of the college main gate when they were writing graffiti on a wall.

Sentu, a third year B.Com student of Suhrawardy College, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital soon after his admission at midnight while Masum succumbed to his injuries at around 6:00am in the morning.

JCD sources in Suhrawardi College said Dakat Shaheed, one of the top criminals of old Dhaka, might be behind the murder. He killed Masum for his intimacy with Sentu, the acting president of Suhrawardi College JCD unit, the sources added.

"Dakat Shaheed used his associate Masum as a tool to kill Sentu, who was Shaheed's rival," added the local sources.

Police is not sure yet whether Sentu's or Shahid's gang are involved in Masum's killing as he had intimacy with both of the groups.

Local sources said Sentu had previous enmity with Dakat Shaheed following extortion activities in the area.

Sentu had been receiving death threats from Shaheed over mobile phone for the last two weeks following a dispute on extortion collection from a businessman of Dholai Khal area.

Sentu's uncle told The Daily Star that after the incident, unknown criminals had been threatening Sentu's family over mobile phone that they will kill them too if they file any case against them.

"We couldn't file any case yet in fear of being killed by the extortionists", said Sentu's uncle.

Police, who are raiding various places to arrest the criminals, confirmed that no case had been filed in this connection as of 8:30pm last night.

Both Sentu and Masum had previous records of criminal cases at different police stations, police added.
