Families of 8 peacekeepers get $ 50,000 each

Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Moeen U Ahmed distributed the cheques among the heirs of the martyred soldiers at a simple ceremony at the Army Headquarters (AHQ).

The peacekeepers, who were killed in the ambush, were: Captain Md Shahid Ashraf Khan, Warrant Officer Md Sohrab Hossain Talukder, Sergeant Md Sirajul Haque, Corporal Md Ataur Rahan Sarker, Private Md Zahirul Islam, Privates Md Abdus Salam (No. 4009645), Md Abdus Salam (No. 4009837) and Private Md Belal Hossain. Besides, Leading Seaman Nurul Islam of Bangladesh Navy was also martyred in the same incident. Naval headquarters will soon hand over the compensation to his family.

The bodies of the peacekeepers were flown in Dhaka on February 28 by a special flight of the UN.

Paying rich tributes to the memory of peacekeepers, General Moeen said Bangladesh Army will always remember the noble efforts of the martyred soldiers in establishing world peace. He said support for the welfare of their family members will continue from Army.

Senior officers of AHQ were present on the occasion.
