The government yesterday introduced in parliament a tough bill arming the authorities with sweeping powers to clean the cultural arena by preventing from screening the uncensored films, porno and indecent pictures or cut-pieces.

Information Minister M Shamsul Islam introduced 'The Censorship of Films (Amendment) Bill 2005', saying that violators of the law shall be punished with imprisonment of one year to three years or with fines upto Tk 10,000, or with both.

A provision of the bill says "no suit, prosecution or other legal proceedings shall lie against the government, the Film Censor Board, chairman, member or any other officer of the Board in respect of anything done or intended to be done in good faith" under the proposed act.

Another tough provision states that "no courts shall grant an injunction or make any interim order" in respect of any order passed by the Board without giving the Board an opportunity of being heard.

The bill was sent to the parliamentary standing committee on Information Ministry for further scrutiny, asking the watchdog body to submit its report within a month.
