Fishing banned in Kaptai Lake

The ban will be effective till further notice, official sources said.

Every year, the district administration bans all types of fishing in the lake from May to August. During the three months, catching of all species of fishe, preservation, marketing, drying and transportation are prohibited in the lake areas, BFDC (Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation) sources said.

During the period, fishes spawn in rainwater and fried grow, they said.

Lawful action will be takes by the concerned authority if any body violates the order.

The 54,000-hectare water body in the biggest man made lake in South East Asia.

Commercial fish cultivation in the lake was started by BFDC in 1984, the sources said.

On an average, 20 to 30 tonnes of different species of fish worth around Tk 2 lakh are collected from the lake daily, they said.
