Five killed in lightning strikes

UNB from Bagerhat reports: Three people were killed and another one was injured in lightning at Kachua and Khanpur yesterday.

Adhir Shil, 45, and Abu Sheikh, 25, were struck by thunderbolt in the afternoon when they took shelter under a Banyan tree during heavy downpour. Both the victims hailed from Pirojpur district.

Injured Kamal, 15, was given treatment at the local hospital.

In another incident, Shariful Islam, 14, a madrasha student, was struck by lightning when he was fishing in a canal at his Khanpur village in the afternoon. The boy died on the spot, villagers said.

Our staff correspondent in Khulna adds: A man was killed in lightning during heavy downpour at 7:00am yesterday.

The dead was identified as Md Mashiur Rahman, 26, of Ghatail village under Dakop upazila of Khulna district.

The death occurred when he was sleeping in the makeshift terrace at his shrimp enclosure at Ghatail village.

His body was handed over to his family at noon after autopsy from KMCH morgue.

It is learned that he was the publicity secretary of Dakop upazila unit of Chhatra Dal.

Our Correspondent in Jessore adds: One person was killed and four others were injured in lightning on Friday night and Saturday morning.

Sources said, Abdur Rashid, 50, of Dhopadi village under Abhoynagar upazila in Jessore was seriously injured being struck by lightning on Friday night. He was rushed to Abhoynagar Upazila Health Complex in a critical state and died there after some time.

Meanwhile, lightning hit different areas in Jessore town and its suburbs yesterday morning injuring at least four people. They are Hafiz, 35, of Sheikhhati village on the outskirts of Jessore town, Anwarul, 33, of Talbara village under Sadar upazila, Shaheda Begum, 60, of Bejpara Taltala area in the town and Beauty Begum, 16, of Arpara village under Sadar upazila. They were admitted to Jessore hospital.
