Five new police stations open in city

These are Shahbagh, Jatrabari, Tejgaon Industrial Area, Uttar Khan and Dakkhin Khan.

In a bid to keep law and order situation under control, the government had decided to establish 51 police stations in Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) area.

Of them, six were inaugurated last year.

The remaining police stations will be inaugurated within next three months, said State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar at a function at the Police Control Room at Shahbagh in the afternoon.

"Those could not be opened so far due to lack of space and logistics support," he said, urging the local lawmakers to extend their hands in this regard.

Police still have much to do to ensure rights of people, especially for women, children and poor, he added.

Babar once again asked policemen to behave more friendly with people who seek their help.

He said construction work of five police barracks and several mini police lines are under process to facilitate the law enforcers, while a Women Assistance and Investigation Centre will be opened soon to deal with women's cases.

The government has appointed 26,259 policemen ranging from constable to superintendent of police and spent around Tk 300 crore for housing of policemen and Tk 8 crore for modernising Sardah Police Academy.

Policemen can perform better if they are given a free hand, said State Minister for Shipping Quamrul Islam.

Citing newspaper reports that the new PSs are not equipped with proper logistics, lawmaker Mosaddek Ali said, " Only increasing the number of PS in the city will not work if the policemen are not given adequate logistics."

Housing and Public Works Minister Mirza Abbas, Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, lawmakers Mahbubuddin Ahmed, Salauddin Ahmed, Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu, SA Khaleq, Inspector General of Police Anwarul Iqbal and DMP Commissioner SM Mizanur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.

Shahbagh PS has been formed splitting Ramna PS and set up at Shahbagh Police Control Room building. It covers part of Segun Bagicha, Topkhana Road, Abdul Gani Road, Railway Hospital Colony, Secretariat Road, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital residential area, High Court Staff Quarters, Suhrawardy Udyan, Tuberculosis clinic area, Buet area, Fulbaria area, Dhaka University campus, Public Library, National Musuem, BSMMU, Aziz Super Market, Hatirpool Bazar, Kataban Power sub-station and a part of Ward No 57.

Jatrabari PS has been formed splitting Demra PS and set up at former Demra PS complex. Demra PS has been transferred to Ahmed Bawani Textile Mill building at Sarulia. Jatrabari PS covers Sayedabad, Jatrabari, Brahmanchiron, Dhalpur, Golapbag (partly), Wapda colony, some parts of Ward No 87 and Mirhazirbagh, Matuail, Kazla, Bhanga Press, Govindpur, Shanir Akhra, Rasulbagh, Kutubkhali and Dania.

Tejgaon Industrial Area PS has been formed by splitting Tejgaon PS and will operate its function from Tejgaon Police Post. The railroad stretching from Mohakhali crossing to Tejgaon crossing will be the divide between Tejgaon and Tejgaon Industrial Area PSs.

Uttar Khan and Dakkhin Khan PSs have been formed splitting Uttara PS. Uttar Khan PS has been set up at 195 Madarbari and Dakkhin Khan PS at 193 Market Road.

Uttar Khan PS covers Uttarkhan, Azampur, Mousaid, Snanghat, Ninni, Ninnir Chak, Amaiya, Palasia, Bhaturia, Bauthar and part of Faydabad and Abdullahpur.

Dakkhin Khan PS covers Barua, Dakkhin Khan, Anol, Moshair, Kurakoir, Soulopur and part of Faydabad and Abdullahpur,
