'Implement CRC to ensure child rights'

They said although the government ratified the convention in 1990, basic rights of the child are yet to be ensured.

The workshop on child rights for the journalists was organised jointly by the Centre for Development Communication (CDC) and Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BASF) in collaboration with Teredes Homes of the Netherlands.

The speakers placed a proposal at the workshop to form a journalists' forum on child rights.

They said the proposed forum would ensure proper coverage of child rights issues in media to pressurise the government in taking initiatives in this regard.

Programme head of Save the Children UK G Nayeem Wahra said Bangladesh is yet to fix the exact age for children as it differs under different government rules and regulations.

Senior Communications Officer of Unicef Shamsuddin Ahmed and Project Co-ordinator of BASF Abdus Shahid Mahmud highlighted the CRC in Bangladesh perspective and the achievement made so far in this regard.

Moderated by CDC Executive Director Muhammad Jahangir, the workshop was also attended by the representatives of different print and electronic media.
