Int'l Nurses Day observed

International Nurses Day (IND) was observed across the country as elsewhere in the world yesterday marking the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

The theme of IND-2007 was 'Positive practice environment: quality workplaces equally quality patient care."

To mark the day, a colourful procession was brought out from the National Museum to the Central Shaheed Minar in the city.

Health and Family Welfare Ministry and Directorate of Nursing Services organised an award and certificate giving function at Shaheed Milon Auditorium in Dhaka Medical College (DMC).

Health and Family Welfare Secretary Ehsan Ul Fattah attended the function as the chief guest with Director of the Nursing Services Rozland Bibha Barai in the chair.

Addition Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Ministry Jamil Osman, Director of Dhaka Medical College Brig. Gen Dr MA Matin, WHO Representative to Bangladesh Dr Duangvadee Sungkhobol, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Fattah urged the nursing community to provide service with honesty and sincerity so that patients get better treatments.

He said the government has taken initiative to bring instructors from Bangkok for giving training to the nurses of the country to improve their quality of services.

Dr Duangvadee Sungkhobol said the government of Bangladesh is now paying increased attention in providing necessary supports to make and maintain positive practice environment for the nurses.

She urged all members of the nursing community to come forward with all your potentials to lead the Nightingale's spirit and prove to the public that Bangladeshi nurses are as good, competent, devoted and committed as those nurses from other countries.

Later, health secretary distributed medals and certificates among the nurses for their outstanding performance.
