State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar yesterday indicated that his ministry is close to controlling the hullabaloo set off by militants and bombers.

"Now it's only a matter of time to control the religious militants operating across the country," he said as he opened a new station in Dhaka district for his police force.

He told the function that those who want to establish Bangladesh as "terrorist state and Islam as a religion of terrors in the world are perpetrating the bomb attacks".

Babar made the remarks while he was inaugurating the new police station at Bipile, carved out through bifurcating the sprawling Savar police jurisdiction that encompassed chains of industrial blocs and other major installations.

With the latest one the number of police stations in Dhaka district now rose to six.

"The moment law-and-order situation was stable and foreign investment environment prevailing in the country, the Islamic militant outfit JMB kicked off serial bomb strikes across the country in August 17. Later they started bombings at courts and public installations through their suicide- squad operatives, killing innocent judges, police and people," lamented the minister in charge of looking after enforcement of the laws.

He said, "It is a national crisis. So everybody should come forward to resolve the crisis," Babar said, adding that the law- enforcers, including elite-force Rab, already have arrested a number of suspected JMB members.

He claimed the present law-and-order situation in country to be better than in any previous years.

Establishment of new police station gives scope for a better service to general people, he said and informed that another police station named South Keraniganj thana will be inaugurated on December 10, rising number of police stations to seven in Dhaka district.

Among others, Local MP Dr Dewan Mohammad Salauddin, Inspector General of Police Md Abdul Quayyum, DIG (Dhaka Range) Dr M Sadekur Rahman, Director General of Rab Abdul Aziz Sirker, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Abdul Bari and Police Super of Dhaka Bakhtiar Alam were also present on the occasion.

Ashulia police station, situated in Bipile mouza of Dhamsona union, consists of five unions of Shimulia, Dhamsona, Pathalia, Yarpur and Ashulia, which were earlier under the jurisdiction of Savar thana.

The new police station is manned by 66 cops, including one inspector, seven sub-inspectors and seven assistant sub-inspectors. It covers a 144.27-square- kilometre area with a population of 234,972.

Some 80 mills and factories with regular and part-time workers, numbering 70,000, are located under Ashulia thana. These mills and factories export goods worth US$ 500 million a year.

Under the modernisation programme of police, the sources said, a total of 2,906 cars were purchased at a cost of Tk 178 crore, 303 rifles replaced with Chinese rifles, 1,138 posts of sub-inspectors created and highway police was formed with 557 personnel.

Besides, process is underway to form an Aviation Wing for police.
