JCD decides not to clash with Shibir

Sources in the meeting said the campus lacks sufficient security arrangement, as most of the policemen deployed on the campus have been withdrawn due to the 14-party opposition combine's road march programme beginning today.

Meanwhile, Jagannath University JCD leaders had a meeting with a BNP lawmaker at his house yesterday to discuss their strategy over the Shibir issue, sources said .

During the meeting, JCD leaders also talked to Shibir President Shafiqul Islam Masud on Jagannath University situation. They reached a consensus that they would no longer clash with each other and the JCD would allow Shibir to enter the campus.

The day before yesterday, the Shibir leaders also held a meeting with the lawmaker, sources added.

Violent clashes among Islami Chhatra Shibir, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on the campus on July 16 and 17 led the authorities to close the university until July 20 and afterwards until July 24.

At least 100 students and several policemen were injured when Shibir men clashed with BCL, JCD and left-leaning student organisations on the campus on July 17. Fifteen more were also injured during a clash the previous day.

According to a university press release, the first year honours final examinations of the university, scheduled to begin on August 3, were deferred due to unavoidable reasons.

The examinations will now begin on August 10.

The authorities said classes will resume on August 1 and students will have to show their identity cards while entering the campus.
